“Our society has grown to value the cheap and easy road of selecting for the easy and for a readily obtainable consumer paradise.
As long as we get what we each want we no longer care about the status quo or such a thing as “the good of society”.
It is every man and woman and child for his or her self from birth onward - and it is the ones who die with the most toys and who win the cult of personality who are highly regarded.
In such a society the desire for real and lasting meaningful engagement with anything worth having is relegated to the “also rans” - the vast majority of people judged ordinary against the “hail fellow well met” Chamber of Commerce mentality of the cult of personality.
This is in effect what we now have - a vast moral and spiritual wasteland of the prosaic - punctuated only by rare encounters with great art and music - and by infrequent forays into the natural world.
Whatever deeper engagement with nature or art or politics we wish to have is precluded by a system which lives in fear of being discovered for exactly what it in fact is.
And that is a comedy of errors which reveals the ever deeper unfolding of intersecting circles of hell.
Every civilization we have tried to build has collapsed at our feet and no one has successfully uncovered the precise reasons.
I believe we live in times which point directly to these reasons and leave us howling at the moon in protest.”
KW NORTON [emphasis added]
A vast moral and spiritual wasteland…do you feel the same? My recurring theme of seeking healthy relationships, communities, and Nature points at the same malaise, the same rot in our human experience. We live so much in habitual ruts. Try this experiment: bring your hands together in a clasp, then notice which thumb is on top. Spread your hands, and repeat. Likely it is the same thumb the second time, too. Now intentionally do it the other way; other thumb on top and see how “natural” or even “comfortable” it does not feel. In a Modern culture of comfort, or at least comfort in certain areas of life like temperature, massive amounts of energy slaves (oil and coal), food wrapped in plastic and indoor plumbing; anything that is uncomfortable is avoided if at all possible.
Returning to a Wild mindset; returning to health in all ways, means turning away from comfort and stretching. It means becoming aware of the unconscious ruts we have dug in our emotions, thoughts, and actions and stepping out of them. I will be publishing another Crumbling Time very soon; it will focus on our energy future, because literally nothing happens without energy. What is the condition of your spiritual energy, right now? Is it Wild or Modern? Is it serving your best interests, your health, your future and the future of all of us…ancestors and descendants? Because we don’t have a lot more time to begin to shift our energy from the ruts we as a culture have dug, into a more beautiful, fulfilling, creative and spiritual world that is completely possible, even if not being widely spoken into being. True change starts within, not by cultural or governmental mandate. This is especially true for Wild change, given that Modern resistance to communicating Wildly is at an all-time high. Let me extend an invitation to you; to be more transparent, to share with others the changes you are making to your spiritual core, and to invite others to join us as we go Wild. Wild is the only way out of this predicament, let’s get going.
